Character Information

Character Name: Taako

Fandom: The Adventure Zone

Character History: There is a creature called a Voidfish that is capable of eating information. Whatever information the Voidfish consumes can either be known by all, or known by none save the inoculated as the Voidfish actively blocks all of reality from remembering, so long as the person has a normal body. The dead and undead are able to remember. It can't destroy the affect that information had, however. It can stop people from remembering a battle, but it can't heal the burnt earth. The Voidfish can destroy information about wars, cities, events. And people. But not their impact.

Taako has lived two hundred years with a family with a bond strong enough to fight a reality consuming entity. Taako believed he lived a hundred years completely alone. He has lived over a decade, seeking out what he couldn't remember, seeking bonds to try and fill a void in his heart that he couldn't remember. Always looking in mirrors, seeking the face of a twin he had forgotten.

Taako lost his parents young, then lost his aunt who taught him to cook, and grew up on the road, moving from caravan to circus, always on the move. In one timeline, with his twin sister Lup, outcasts, but never alone. In another, he had no one and had to keep himself safe. A hard time for an elf with a childhood a century long.

In one timeline, his sister and he joins the Institute of Planar Research and Exploration. Their expertise in magic and cooking eventually leads to them being selected for a mission to leave their Planar System, their reality, using the Light of Creation, and see what was beyond. However, as the crew of the Starblaster left their system, they saw the Hunger. An entity that consumed their home. So began their hundred year journey through Planar Systems. Every year, they would enter a system, see a Light of Creation fall into the system, and the Hunger would come a year later. If they found the Light and left the system first, it was saved. If they could not get the Light, the Hunger consumed the system. And each time they left the system, they would reset to the moment they left their original system. Even if they died, they would reset to that moment and they died. A lot.

Taako, already distrusting by nature, became callous over the century, seeing everyone outside of the crew as talking dust, knowing after the year, he would never see them again. Even if they saved the system, the Hunger would ravage it, and he would never know if people he cared for died. So. He stopped, to the best of his ability, and focused on himself and those on the Starblaster. His family.

Along the way, they were able to save a Voidfish from one reality, and finally found a plan to stop the Hunger's pursuit. To split the Light of Creation, make it impossible to track, at the cost of making powerful relics. The plan worked, but the world fought wars over the relics that had to be pursued to maintain their division. The destruction weighed down on everyone.

The most on Lucretia, who had come up with an even riskier plan, but no one would agree to it. So Lucretia chose to use the Voidfish's power to pacify her family until she could hopefully stop the Hunger once and for all as well as making the world forget about the relics. Unfortunately, Lup had vanished at this point, in her attempts to stop the chaos of her relic.

In another timeline, Taako grew up alone, until the time came that he got the money to start his own traveling show. Sizzle It Up With Taako, using magic and advanced cooking techniques to dazzle villages. For years, he's successful and mostly happy. He is loved and he has a partner, Sazed, to ease the ache in his heart he can't explain.

Until Sazed, unbeknownst to Taako, grew jealous of Taako's fame and his refusal to really share the credit. Sazed poisons Taako's food in an attempt to murder Taako. Unfortunately, that was the one show Taako didn't taste test his food. And instead killed forty people in Glamour Springs. They ran, Taako believing he had accidentally transformed elderberries into deadly Nightshade with reckless magic and that he was at fault. Sazed vanished at the next town, and Taako swore to never cook for anyone again if he cared whether they lived or died.

He wanders on his own for years, barely scraping by, until he meets Magnus and Merle in a bar. His second first meeting with them. Desperate for money, Taako agrees to join them on a job. The job leads them to one of the relics they made and are recruited by Lucretia into her organization, the Bureau of Balance, who had realized only the makers of the relics could resist using them. The Voidfish had a child, allowing her to still block their memories of their time together, but allowing them to remember the relics themselves.

Taako agrees to hunt the relics for three reasons. One was money. Two was a feeling of importance, since he was the only one confirmed to be able to resist the relics at first. And three was the guilt of Glamour Springs and Phandalin, which had been destroyed by the first relic.

In spite of himself, Taako grows to care for Magnus and Merle and even a few people in the Bureau, notably Angus McDonald who becomes one of the few people Taako trusts without question. These people become his fourth reason and Taako starts discovering what he forgot. How much he cares about people, how good he is at magic, how capable he is, how there is more to him than charm and a pretty face. He even figures out he really likes teaching people.

Throughout the journey for the relics, things start to crop up. One comes from a Grim Reaper named Kravitz, who informs the three men they have died without moving on multiple times, with Merle winning at fifty-seven. (Taako also figures out Death is a nerd after he cons Kravitz into a date.) There is also the oddity in his Umbrastaff, which will at times act with a will of it's own and once burning the word LUP into a wall. A recent one is after encountering the Temporal Chalice.

The Chalice tries to convince the men to take it by offering them the ability to fix a regret in their past. Taako is offered the chance to prevent what happened at Glamour Springs. In making the offer, Taako finally learns that it was Sazed who poisoned the audience. At the same time, however, he learns that he has A LOT of time that he can't remember. Ultimately, he refuses the offer, since Glamour Springs was technically not his fault, and more importantly, he was less alone with the timeline as it was.

It's a few weeks after this Taako arrives in Nautilus.

In his future, he has one more relic to retrieve, going through games of suffering and near death experiences, but he also figures out how far he is willing to go for Merle and Magnus, sacrificing some of his beauty for them, and risking his very soul to drag Magnus from the brink. Only to learn Magnus has been sitting on a lot of conspiracy, as close as to figuring out what Lucretia has hidden from them as he was capable of with the Voidfish's influence. His trust his shaken, but his love for Magnus leads him to investigate the Bureau and finding the second Voidfish.

In a rush, Taako learned what he had forgotten, just in time for the Hunger to attack. He also realizes his sister, who had turned into a spectral lich upon her death, was trapped inside his Umbrastaff. He free his sister, and renews his hope. It's then that, as Taako is want to do, he figures out a third option. A way to defeat the Hunger without war or risking the life of a whole Planar System.

With his family, and the world, having learned their story from the Voidfishes, fight the Hunger, and they win. They were hurt, they had suffered losses, but the world recovered, it thrived, and the crew of the Starblaster reached it's happy ending.

Character Personality: Taako is someone who sees himself as a disgraced "TV" personality who will one day return to glory. He's also a terrible person who has more or less stumbled into being one of the greatest heroes of his reality because of how determined he is to keep what's his. Because at the end of the day, Taako will let a world burn, but he will burn a world to keep his people safe. It's just fortunate he cares about their mental health as well.

Taako is aloof and arrogant, always talking highly of himself in most aspects, and overall doesn't concern himself with others. To the point it can be hard to tell whether he's an arrogant idiot, or he just simply doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks, and most of the time, Taako doesn't care to correct anyone either way. Taako is a person of fronts, genuine selfishness, and deep rooted distrust. Taako doesn't trust easily, holding most everyone at arms length, and he is slow to care for people. He is also a person of very little introspection because on one hand, he wants to love himself, and think he's the most amazing person ever. On the other hand, he spent a long time thinking he was a failure and an idiot for letting Glamour Springs happen and doesn't believe people will ever hold much value in him. There are few things he sees as his failure, but what are failures weigh heavily on him. Not helped in the fact that Taako has had some of the deepest bonds a person could ever create and has it ripped from him for over a decade. He knows what it's like to be truly treasured even if he can't remember why and knows he lacks it.

Taako is a person where his actions speak louder than his words. It's a rare time where Taako is honest, usually keeping up the air of the arrogant "TV" personality, flamboyant and callous, someone unrepentantly selfish no matter what. When it comes to actions, that changes to more fifty/fifty. If he sees someone getting into a dumb fight they don't need to be in, he's more than willing to let them get their ass kicked. If he cares about them, he might do a few small helpful things. However, if someone he cares about are in mortal danger? Taako is more than willing to do what it takes to save them. He would prefer to not risk his LIFE to do it, but it's on the table.

And at his core, that is who Taako is. Taako doesn't care about the world, but he cares about people. He is someone who is desperate for connection, something rare with his distrust, so when he has it, he will not let it go. It's this connection that let's him share his few moments of honesty, it's what allows him to go after relics long after guilt faded, it's what would eventually lead to him going against the Bureau on Magnus' words alone. Taako has saved countless worlds simply because the people he loved wanted to do so. He would bitch, he would complain, he would try and talk them out of foolhardy actions, but when push came to shove, he would do anything for those he loved. Taako is a hero because he loves heroes and someone needed to keep their asses alive.

A boon because Taako is extremely good at finding a third option. He's pragmatic, selfish, but also insanely clever and because he's more focused on getting his people to safety despite their heroics, he usually has clearer eyes of the situation. More than once Taako was responsible for a dangerous situation getting turned around. Not that Taako is against helping people in principle. He is a terrible person, but not an evil person. He may lie, cheat, and con people out of their coin, but he will never harm an innocent person if he can avoid it. He is someone who needs things to be gray, a sort of justification for his actions, or at least make it not his own fault. When he does something he knows is bad and he can't justify it properly, he does try to go in a round about way to make up for it.

Taako is also the biggest troll ever. He loves messing with people and it's usually the people who play along with him or obviously see through him who usually worm their way into his heart. It's a rare time he takes things seriously, either apathetic, or making things into a joke. He's even been known to cast spells to mess with people just for the heck of it. If Taako isn't trying to be a charming "TV" personality, he's basically in a constant state of trying to drive everyone away from him through being an annoying, bitchy weirdo and then hoarding the ones who outright refuse to acknowledge his efforts.

Powers and Abilities: As an elf, Taako has the ability to see in the dark, and can choose to meditate for four hours instead of sleeping. He's got an longer lifespan, and resistance to mental enchantments.

Taako is a wizard with an expertise in transmutation magic. While he's able to do plenty of other spells, from offense, defense, illusionary, divination, he's best with magic of changing one thing to another, and creating things from 'nothing.' He's even able to shapeshift. Some favorites is summoning a phantom steed, Garyl, magic missile, scorching ray, and charm person. Most of his magic requires components as a focus, but Taako in particular has shown an ability to do some innately while suffering great emotional turmoil.

Network: All right, all right, so this is a whole other world dealie, but we can all like get enlightened or whatever.

Needless drama, save the universe, yeah, okay, got it.

Anyway, that's not important. What is important is me.

Hey, hello. [Waving at the camera and gesturing to focus on him.] I'm Taako. You know, from TV? And right now?

I. Am. Bored.

Seriously, this nonsense interrupted me getting ready for a date. A date! With a very handsome man, he was going to take me to a nice restaurant in Goldcliff and do you know how hard it is to find a date when you're on a moonbase most of the time? [And he's started pacing, gesturing in the air as he rants.] Like all the guys are like dating my brother or depressed or some weirdo with some kind of addiction problem or is named BRAD and no. I will not date a Brad. I will not date a BRAD from HUMANOID RESOURCES. I refuse. [Shaking his head, making an X with his arms.] I finally found a guy whose worth the effort to do wing eyeliner and I don't have to have Avi in my business for travel and then I get kidnapped into this bullshit!

At the very least you could have proper entertainment! Where are the bars, where are the night clubs? Where's the theater? Give me a place that at least has some people doing shit in costumes, because this whole bending thing? Old hat, I've been making shit out of nothing for years, that's magic! If i'm stuck here for the foreseeable future, I'd rather not be bored out of my goddamn mind.

Third Person: Okay. He had to admit to himself, he should have picked up Furman was a construct a whole lot sooner. He just thought he was a terrible waiter. Sure, not offensive, but he's been a waiter a few times. Usually when the head cook in a restaurant was a fool and didn't recognize how amazing Taako was in the kitchen, but when he needed money, he needed money. Certainly better than some of his other options at the time.
Or their options? Was it their options?

Taako groaned, putting a hand to his head, trying to shake away the headache and the contradictory memories. He had no idea what he was going to do when he saw Lucretia again, but he's pretty sure all the headaches deserved some special bit of snippy pettiness. If he didn't kill her. Which he might, if not for the ache in his heart at the thought of killing his family.

He shook his head again, banishing the thoughts, looking at the construct with a deep frown. It had taken the fifth time of being asked if he wanted more for him to pick up that was ALL the construct was saying. Which warranted a more closer examination and Taako has seen constructs before. The blankness, the stiffness, all little things that were off that screamed not real. The details in the body were good, but the mannerisms were all pretty clearly not alive.

But this realization brought with it a whole other one. Such as the fact if the person wasn't an actual person, then it's highly unlikely that bending didn't make the food. Not real food, food made with magic. Well, 'bending,' which was fucking magic, Taako didn't understand why people wanted to say it was different. Magic bent reality through willpower, that was it's basic form!

Taako was staring at the meal before him. It smelled delicious. It looked well cooked, and like it was plated professionally. It was food made with magic. Made with magic made by some automated construct. It should be fine. It should be safe.

He picked up a fork, speared an asparagus, lifted it to his mouth. He was hungry, he needs to eat.

He takes a bite and it's paper. "Fuck!" He dropped the fork and vegetable that were now both made of paper. "Fuck, fuck, fuck, goddamnit, there was never any nightshade!" He berated himself. Not that it would do any good. Conjured food was too much, too soon after the trip down memory lane, and it seemed like bending and transmutation were similar enough for it to act the same in the face of deep rooted trauma.

He scowled, standing up and heading for the door. There had to be SOMEONE with a passion of cooking with a restaurant around here. If he didn't know for sure the food was conjured, he'd be fine.

...he hoped.
